Willie Nelson Tops Charts; Paul Thorn Readies New Album; Joey Martin Battles Cancer

  • In an interview for CelebStoner.com (yeah, you probably shouldn’t click that if you’re at work), Willie Nelson revealed that he and Kacey Musgraves are “going to do some recording together.”
  • Nelson’s Band of Brothers is his first chart-topping country album in nearly 30 years, selling 37,000 copies in its first week.
  • Peter Cooper’s newest Tennessean column looks at Band of Brothers producer and co-writer Buddy Cannon.
  • Our pal Jewly Hight interviewed blues singer Janiva Magness for CMT Edge.
  • Michael McCall wrote a fine piece for The Nashville Scene on country music’s “Class of 1989.”
  • Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party website ran a feature on Sarah Jarosz. Fingers crossed that this’ll lead to Jarosz jamming with Mouse Rat on the next season of Parks and Rec.
  • Lucinda Williams talks songwriting, her forthcoming albums, and more in this interview with Seven Days.
  • Alejandro Escovedo has formed a new band called The Fauntleroys with Linda Pitmon, Nicholas Tremulis, and Ivan Julian. The band’s debut EP, Behind the Pink Pony, will be released on Plowboy Records September 15. USA Today premiered one of the band’s new songs, “I’m in Love with Everything.”
  • Joey Martin is battling cervical cancer. Doctors caught it early and Martin recently underwent surgery. Husband Rory Feek wrote a blog post about his wife’s diagnosis and treatment.
  • Sammy Shelor sat in with the Zac Brown Band for a few songs at a show in Bristow, Virginia over the weekend.
  • Seattle Weekly published a feature on area guitarist “Country” Dave Harmonson, who’s played with folks like Zoe Muth and Cahalen Morrison and has an upcoming solo album called Alive & Pickin’.
  • Speaking of Cahalen Morrison, he and Country Hammer will release The Flower of Muscle Shoals on Free Dirt Records August 19.
  • Have any Illinois readers been to The Outpost in Armington? It sounds like a neat little honky tonk.
  • The track listing for Sunny Sweeney’s Provoked (out August 5), includes co-writes with Ashley Monroe, Angaleena Presley, Buddy Owens, Natalie Hemby, and more.
  • The Wall Street Journal posted the title track (featuring harmony vocals from Emmylou Harris) from the upcoming reissue of Bob Carpenter’s Silent Passage.
  • Robyn Ludwick’s next album, Little Rain, comes out July 15. She’ll celebrate with a handful of album release shows.
  • Also on NoiseTrade: Americana duo The Tall Pines.

Did Sunny Sweeney co-write with Buck Owens’ son Buddy Alan or is this another Buddy Owens?

Yes–that’s THAT Buddy Alan (Owens). Sunny also appeared with him at a performance at the Hall of Fame last winter.

I’m glad to hear that Willie and Kacey will be recording together! I had hoped that their tour together would result in some sort of collaboration.

Sunny has a knack for collaborating with the progeny of the greats. Charlie Rich’s grandson Cole Lee accompanied her on guitar for awhile.
