Willie Nelson, Pistol Annies to Perform at CMT Awards; Tim McGraw to Give Homes to Veterans; Keller Williams and The Travelin’ McCourys Team Up for New Album

  • The Country Music Association announced that the 46th Annual CMA Awards will be held on November 1 and broadcast live on ABC.
  • Patsy Montana’s “I Want to Be a Cowboy’s Sweetheart” is another country music song being added to the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry.
  • Willie Nelson, The Pistol Annies, The Band Perry, Hank Jr., Eric Church, Luke Bryan, Toby Keith, and Rascal Flatts have been added to the CMT Awards’ lineup of performers.
  • GAC’s list of the top 20 soldier songs includes cuts from Johnny Horton, Johnny Cash, Radney Foster, Glen Campbell and The Dixie Chicks.
  • Tim McGraw has teamed up with Chase and Operation Homefront to give away 25 homes to veterans and their families on his upcoming tour.
  • Daniel Mullins takes a look at “Frankie and Johnny” as part of Bluegrass Today’s Jimmie Rodgers Remembrance Week.
  • Jack Silverman of the Nashville Scene digs honkytonker JP Harris’ debut record: Harris’ brand-new first album I’ll Keep Callin’ (Cow Island Music) is an impressive debut, and faithfully hews to his two self-proclaimed rules: Keep it country, and keep it simple. What Brown’s Diner and Dino’s are to burgers, Harris is to country music. You’ll find no auditory arugula here, no sonic pesto. Maybe the musical equivalent of grilled onions and a slice of tomato, but that’s about it.
  • Via press release: Lee Greenwood will appear on the Lifetime Channel’s “The Balancing Act” on May 30.
  • Due out July 3: Pick, a collaboration between Keller Williams and the Travelin’ McCourys.
  • Country California posted a brief interview with Etta Britt.
  • Here’s video from earlier this month of the Zac Brown Band performing the title track to their upcoming album, Uncaged.

It will be nice to have an actual country music legend appearing at the CMT Awards along with the slew of random pop/rock/movie stars with little or no connection to country music. And if we get Pistol Annies with that, I sure can’t complain there.

I’d like to hear the Pistol Annies sing “Trailer For Rent” on the CMT Awards Show just so the censors would have to bleep the word “sh*t” for the TV broadcast! (lol) Those shows always make for a great live blog by Rita Ballou and her merry band of whores (at least that’s what Rita calls them). All those non-country celebrities are great cannon fodder for Rita and her posse…

I can’t believe its taken this long for that Patsy Montana song to gain this recognition! It was the first female artist recording to sell over a million copies in the US at a time when the great depression was in full swing. Better late than never though.

That Keller Williams / Travelin’ McCoury’s project sounds interesting. My bluegrass radar is twitching!

Well at least as Joe Nichols fades into obscurity he will always be remembered for his career high water mark “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off”…
