Alan Doyle is also one of the principals of Great Big Sea, one of Canada's best Celtic/folk bands. I'm definitely looking forward to his solo work.

It's not surprising that the negotiations are hung up when the documentary producer has to reach agreements with a dozen different copyright holders--and some of them probably couldn't care less if his film gets released or not.

Ultimately, I'd guess the solution will be for Congress to set a statutory royalty rate based on a formula with a bunch of variables.

Yeah, Jon; you'd think they'd notice. But negotiations about screen usage are horrendous these days, for reasons those folks bring up. (i.e.: Greed overcoming Sense. Which I've heard it sometimes can do..) That's far from the only documentary hung up over music use..

Interesting story about the Wrecking Crew documentary. Seems like it ought to be possible to come to a meeting of the minds regarding the licensing, no matter how complex. Most important data point in that article: Standing In The Shadows Of Motown made over $2,000,000 in box office alone, nemmind DVD revenues.

Opry Alert! Tonight's Opry will feature Marty Stuart as the "Spotlight Artist" so he can promote his new album. Other artists include Billy Yates, Mandy Barnett, James Wesley, and Jim Ed Brown. Grade: B
Schedule: http://www.opry.com/shows/ThisWeek.html

"Wagon Wheel" captures everything good about a modern string/jug band revival song. The energy, the vocals, the tune, and just general exhuberance that permeates the song elevates it far above the pack. I hear other Americana string bands on Music City Roots on a regular basis and most of the are completely forgettable. Old Crow Medicine Show was really "in the groove" when they recorded that song.

Nice to hear that Kasey and Shane are heading back into the studio. Kasey is not one to repeat herself artistically, so I wonder what the end result will sound like this go round? Hmm...

Can't say I care much for the Civil Wars version of Billie Jean. The potential was there, but they missed the mark by my reckoning. Oh well.
