Vote Now: The 9513′s 2nd Annual Country Music Awards

Staff | January 6th, 2010

Here at The 9513 we love all kinds of country music, so it’s no surprise that the nominees for our 2nd Annual Country Music Awards include everyone from mainstream darlings to bluegrass legends and Texas icons. Once again we’ve worked diligently to identify the most deserving artists and projects from all corners of country music’s “big tent,” our goal to encourage greater synergy between the genre’s mainstream and it’s various sub-cultures.

Last year’s Country Artist of the Year winner Willie Nelson is once again nominated in the marque category, while 27 others artists earned nods in categories ranging from Song of the Year to Best Album Cover. Now, it’s time for you to vote for your favorites view the results.

Eligibility:

The 9513’s 2nd Annual Country Music Awards recognizes the best country music released between Nov. 1, 2008, and Nov. 1, 2009, as nominated and unanimously agreed upon by our editorial staff.

  • The eligibility period and the nomination methodology utilized here are different than those used to produce our Top Albums and Best Songs lists, which are meant as a broad representation of our staff’s top picks for the year. Nominees for “Album of the Year” (for example) may or may not overlap directly with those which appear on our year-end or decade-end lists.
  • Nominees are selected based primarily on artistic merit, not commercial success or viability.
  • Nominees may include artists and music classified as Country, Americana, Red Dirt, Bluegrass, Folk, or any other genre label, so long as the nominated artist or project is unanimously deemed “country” by The 9513’s editorial staff, and would reasonably fit within our usual coverage framework.

Voting:

We’ve selected the nominees, but it’s your job to help us pick the winners. The 9513’s 2st Annual Country Music Awards is unique because voting is a partnership between our staff and readers.

  • 50% of the final results will be based on public voting
  • 50% of the final results will be based on The 9513 staff votes
  • Readers who have left 50 or more comments within the eligibility period will have their votes mathematically weighted (i.e. their votes will have slightly more leverage when the final numbers are calculated).
  • Voting is public—and we’ve even provided a form (located adjacent to the ballot) to send the voting page to your friends.
  • You must use a valid email address when you vote. You will be required to confirm your ballot.
  • You may only vote once. We’ve taken a number of measures to this end, and any votes which we feel compromise the integrity of the awards will be dismissed.
  • Voting is open from Wednsaday, January 6th, to 11:59 am Eastern Standard Time on Sunday, January 24th.

“Readers who have left 50 or more comments within the eligibility period will have their votes mathematically weighted …”

    I really like that rule.

    January 6, 2010 at 2:18 pm

However, if all 50 of your comments were on one post about Rascal Flatts/Carrie Underwood/Taylor Swift/Bucky Covington, your votes will count against your selected candidates.

    Just kidding. That’s not a rule… yet.

  3. Leeann Ward

Ah…I wish it was a rule. Please consider it, 9513ers!

  4. Nicolas
    January 6, 2010 at 2:45 pm

Its not like any of those artists were nominated anyways, so those voters wouldn’t be helping any of them win ;)

    You make a point, Nicolas.

One of the reasons I like The9513 so much is its commitment to judging music on artistic qualities irrespective of a song’s success in the commercial atmosphere. I can imagine, however, many people would rather consider voting for songs they are already familiar with, and for this reason, I’m surprised “Best Single of the Year” was not an additional award. Researching listening to the nominees for “Best Song” was valuable and enjoyable, but I think most listeners are interested to hear how their own favorite, familiar songs stand up to professional criticism and other interested voters. I am sure you guys had a great time tearing apart the ten worst singles of the year, but I am sure you agree some are worthy of recognition. Personally, I would approve of nominations for “Fifteen,” “Til Summer Comes Around,” “Welcome to the Future,” and “Need You Now.”

I’m just glad Jamey Johnson is getting the credit he deserves. Great songwriter, singerm performer. Nobody tops him in today’s “country”

I agree with Joe. A “Best Single of the Year” would’ve been great. If that category were up, I’d nominate “Need You Now,” “American Saturday Night,” “Living For The Night,” “All I Ask For Anymore,” and “White Liar.”

Do I get even more voter weighting for my frequent use of the words Obamavoter and Odumbo in my 9513 comments? Oh, I didn’t think so….

My vote cannot be cast because the form doesn’t accept RFC allowed e-mail addresses (ie those with a + symbol). Boo.

Best Artist – Jamey Johnson (how is this even debatable?)

Best New Artist – Zac Brown Band
Best Group – Zac Brown Band
Best Song – High Cost Of Living (Again – this is maybe one of the Top 5 Country songs ever written. Ever.)

Hey, where’s fast Ryde’s “That Thang” and Jypsi’s “Mister Officer” in the best song category? Talk about losing your credibility…(lol)

I don’t see Ronnie Milsap anywhere here – agree that Gene Watson deserves some award but Ronnie had “Then Sings My Soul” Album that is still selling and “Up To Zion” which made it to #1 of Christian music – - this means Ronnie has charted in at least four (4) decades. I vote for Ronnie Milsap, one of our most deserving living legends.

That might be an interesting poll. I don’t know. Might be a bit mean, too. Though any idea from another Sam can’t be too bad!

Wow – just to listen to the fabulous voice of Gene Watson is like seeing the sun coming up in the morning and watching it light up the whole world. Gene is a pure gold country music icon and his voice and all of his choices of his music are one of the greatest treats any music fan could ever wish for. He makes every song so personal, so wonderfully emotional, and each time I hear a different song by him I marvel at his unbelievable talent. He always makes me feel as if he’s singing just to me all the time, and I don’t know of any other recommendation that is any better than that. His “Taste of the Truth” album is the greatest.

    My vote goes to Gene
Watson’s Album ‘A Taste of The Truth’. His voice is just something else. Gene is a very talented singer and musician and should be recognised for all his input into country music.
