Like Jerry Douglas's (or, for that matter, Sam Bush's) music or not, calling it "noodling" says a lot more about your powers of discernment than it does about the music. That BMI deal stinks, much like the ASCAP deal which preceded it. There's still plenty of strength left in terrestrial radio, but the long range prognosis isn't particularly good, so these settlements strike me as backwards from a songwriter/publisher point of view.
