I've been waiting for what seems like forever for the second Connie Smith box set. I'm glad to hear that it will finally see the light of day soon.

Truth in advertising; I've spent a lot of time working with Connie Smith (Marty Stuart, too, separately) in the past year and a half. Since it's been announced now, on GAC, I've written the book for the new Bear Family Connie Smith box set that will be out early next year. It covers the second half of her classic years with RCA Victor--all the rest of her recordings, including a bunch never released in the day. There were over 20 hours of interviews involved. It's been a great experience all around. And it will be a great set. I did the bio for her new record, too, so I've not reviewed it. But I'll just say that there would have been maybe three new top hits on there--if this were the day!

Great article Barry. I would have truly enjoyed the Connie Smith and friends assemblage and would not attend a Taylor Swift concert even if given a free pass.

Jean Shepherd was truly a "girl singer" rebel and pioneer back in the 1950's and helped pave the path Loretta Lynn followed in the early 1960's. I'm sure Jean's early association with Rose Maddox helped inspire her to be so gutsy and stand up for herself. Jeans's wonderful song "Two Whoops and a Holler" still amazes me for its open hostility towards men in general.

I have the pleasure of seeing The Quebe Sisters Band perform live at the Santa Clarita Cowboy Poetry and Music Festival every other year and they always receive a standing ovation. Eddie Stubbs loves them and Marty and Connie have darn near adopted them! Billionaire Warren Buffet likes them so much he flies them in for his annual shareholder's meetings. They had no musical backgrounds when they approached Joey McKenzie for fiddle lessons and he let them listen to old western swing, cowboy music, and swing jazz music that they've since adopted as their own. I agree with Barry that by focusing on the music of The Sons of the Pioneers and Bob Wills (and The Mills Brothers ad Benny Goodman among others) the Quebe's will always remain a niche act, but it is a joy to hear them perform live.

I thought Connie Smith's three choices of focus for her Artist in Residence shows were very interesting and diverse. This was a great read Barry; thanks for covering both events and writing in such depth about them!
