I'm quite familiar with both versions of "Hurt", as my husband is a Nine Inch Nails fan (Johnny Cash too), so I kinda associate the song with both. My problem with Lucinda Williams' version, to be honest, is that I'm just not a fan of hers. I've tried to appreciate her music, since so many people that I respect do, but it just hasn't happened. Even on the excellent Rodney Crowell/Marry Carr album, hers is the one track that I don't like.

@CHICKETTE, Randy Travis gets a naked DWI and looks like he may have some serious alcohol problems, but the cigarettes are the part that bothers you?

I think there's a very context interesting question, today, on whether when hearing a version of "hurt" people are relating it to Johnny Cash, or Nine Inch Nails, or both! And I'm not saying that to be cute; it's interesting.

I'm not fond of Licinda's Williams' version of "Hurt" either, I must admit.

Very sad about Randy Travis. I hope he will get some intensive help vry soon.

I kind of disagree with Timeo; Hurt is exactly the kind of song Lucinda is known for, and in a real ways it's more her sort of thing than it ever was Johnny Cash's, who, IMHO, saw the depth and pertinence in what was there across a great sociological divide and knew how to make the most of it. (All it takes to think that's the best "Johnny cash record' on the other hand, is to, basically, know nothing at all about the actual Johnny Cash and what he did for decades, nothing but the finger photo.)

Anyhow, Lucinda does there, I think--what she does.

Miss Leslie has got to stop being so danged independent! If she were to sign up with the Heart of Texas label folks, she could wind up in Nashville doing an E.T Record Shop Midnite Jamboree and maybe guest on the Opry! She has got to widen her strategic horizons! (lol) Her ex-guitar player is now Amber Digby's husband, so she's got direct connections. On the other hand Leslie's indie albums sound better than most Heart of Texas products. Hmmm....

I was thinking that maybe the Wild West Songwriters Festival would have something to do with cowboy and western artists. WRONG! Who in the hell are those people? Sheesh!

The Lucinda Williams rendition of “Hurt” from “We Walk the Line” is one of the WORST (sorry, didn't mean to hit the submit button) interpretations of a song I’ve ever heard. I’ll be interested if it’s any better when you can see it as well as hear it.
