I might have missed it but ‘Mama He’s Crazy’ by The Judd’s comes to mind. Also Tim McGraw’s new single ‘Meanwhile Back At Mama’s’ and Carrie Underwood’s ‘Mama’s Song.’

    Awesome list, Juli!

I also always enjoyed Mica Roberts duet with Toby Keith, ‘Things A Mama Don’t Know.’ I understood why last year when I found out Brandy Clark had a hand in writing it.

And another just popped into my head – Shenandoah’s ‘Mama Knows’

“I Heard My Mother Weeping” from Longview is great.
I saw you included “Momma’s Apron Strings” from Larry Sparks. His song, “Momma” is just as good.
“Thanks Again” from Ricky Skaggs is terrific, as is “Mama’s Roses” from The Spinney Brothers.

I like Sunny Sweeney’s take on “Mama’s Opry” and always liked “Mama” by BJ Thomas.

JPap beat me to “Mama Knows” so how about “Three Wooden Crosses”?

There are just so many touching songs about Mama that I’ve heard, listening to country radio over the years.

    There’s

“I was drunk the day my Mom got out of prison
and I went to pick her up in the rain,
But before I could get to the station in my pick-up truck,
she got run over by a damned old train….”

    and

    “Mama was a looker
    Lord how she shined,
Papa was a good ‘un but the jealous kind
Papa loved Mama, Mama loved men,
Mama’s in the graveyard, Papa’s in the pen.”

    and the comparatively mild

“Mama used to whup me with a George Jones album,
That’s why I sing this way.”

I always think of Dolly Parton’s “To Daddy” as a song that’s really for Mama.

Others that I love: Patty Griffin’s “Burgundy Shoes,” the Emmylou Harris/Linda Ronstadt cover of Sinead O’Connor’s “This is to Mother You,” and Lori McKenna’s “Leaving This Life.”

Ricky Skaggs’s version of “A Vision Of Mother”

Sunny Sweeney’s version of “Mama’s Opry”, with an assist to Bobby Flores.

Haggard’s “I’m the Son of Hickory Holler’s Tramp” and Jeannie C. Riley’s “Harper Valley PTA.”

Dolly’s “Eagle When She Flys” always reminds me of my mom, and Arlene is right – Emmy and Dolly’s versions of “To Daddy” really are about mama… If you have time, give it a listen – there is quite a twist toward the end

For something that’s not exactly a tribute to a mother, but is about being a mother, there’s always “One’s on the Way.”

The Band Perry “Mother Like Mine.”
