Pickathon Lineup Announced; Jerrod Niemann’s Bus Catches Fire; Friday Night Lights Actress Connie Britton to Star in ABC’s Nashville

Juli Thanki | March 7th, 2012

  • This year’s Pickathon lineup was just announced: Whitey Morgan & The 78s, Danny Paisley & The Southern Grass, Abigail Washburn, and Cajun Country Revival are just a few of the acts slated to play the August festival.
  • Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame inducted Lyle Lovett, Robert Earl Keen, and the late Townes Van Zandt. Jim Caligiuri of the Austin Chronicle attended the show, which also featured Steve Earle paying tribute to Van Zandt.
  • Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights) and Hayden Panetierre (Heroes) will star in ABC pilot Nashville: Britton will play the fading veteran country star forced by her record label to tour with Panettiere’s teen idol, with their contentious relationship just one of many dramatic entanglements taking place against the backdrop of the Nashville music scene.
  • Jerrod Niemann’s bus caught fire after a benefit concert for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
  • The Triggerman of Saving Country Music says Kellie Pickler’s 100 Proof is “one of the best albums to come off of Music Row in years.”
  • Speaking of Pickler, here’s a Spotlight feature Blake Boldt wrote about her for M Music & Musicians Magazine.
  • The Farewell Drifters played a trio of songs for CMT. Check out the performances here.
  • Lee Brice’s second album, Hard 2 Love, will be released April 24.
  • Free download: “I’m a River” from Sam Lewis’ self-titled debut, which is out next week.
  • Chris Mateer of Uprooted Music Revue interviewed Americana singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell. Here’s an excerpt where Jewell talks about her songwriting: I interact with songs as I do with people. To me, they each have their own character and their own individual will. I can’t make a song be a certain way any more than a mother can force her child to have a certain personality. It’s a passive experience for me. I try to write down what I hear and then get out of the way.
  • Barry Mazor attended yesterday’s Hall of Fame induction announcements. Here are some shots.

I heard from a little birdy close to him that Garth’s shirt was left untucked to hide the fact his jeans were too big and they used safety pins to overlap the waistband to hold them in place; none of his belts in Nashville fit him anymore since he’s taken off a considerable amount of weight!

Connie Britton is playing an aging veteran? Good grief. If she’s aging, I must be …. [checks self for signs of cronehood] Although if that means she will be around Nashville to do some exterior shots, I’m all in favor.

Music City Roots Alert! Tonight’s MCR will feature The Steeldrivers, brother and sister team The Roys, David Olney, and a Humming House(?). Should be another good one! Go MCR and Go Roys!

Rick’s comment: I think Amy should follow the lead of Rebecca Lynn Howard and do this show in her PJ’s!

    From the Country Aircheck website:
“Country Stars Lounge Around at ABC!”
“John Rich, The JaneDear Girls, Emily West and Kristin Chenoweth are among the artists currently in the new ABC Music Lounge, following their songs’ inclusion during Sunday night’s (3/4) premiere of ABC-TV’s GCB, which stars Chenoweth. The ABC Lounge showcases video clips, music and artists featured on ABC’s primetime schedule. A GCB soundtrack will be available from Elektra/Nashville May 8. Fans interested in purchasing the music can visit the Lounge at: http://abc.go.com/music-lounge/
Rick’s comment: I’m saddened to see Emily West associated with that fetid “Good Christian Biatches” mockfest on ABC, but hope she does earn some money in the process! Go Emily!

Connie Britton and Hayden Panetierre together in a new show huh? If they both promise to wear tight, low cut sequined outfits from Manuel, I’m in! (lol)
