True. I really do think the Folsom album is amazing and love the stuff he did with Rick Rubin. As a kid in the 70's I remember buying some Cash albums that were not as good as the earlier stuff and in hindsight not as good as the american recordings that finished out his career. All in all I think Cash is one of the overall most important artists in the history of American music. My first musical memories revolve around hearing early Cash and Elvis sun records my parents played around the house. I'm sure that has something to do with my feelings about Cash's music.

TX-
Hey, I happened to be a big Johnny Cash fan--for various reasons, I suppose--but I'm hardly shocked that someone does not like his music.

Cash's image received a substantial revisionist upgrade during the Rick Rubin period both before and after Cash's death. But during much of his career, Cash often seemed to be groping to find the right material and the right sound. A lot of people parodied his rather limited vocal range.

Cash also had a rather unthreatening persona in the mid-'70s to the '80s, playing up patriotic and Christian themes and dressing in tuxedos. In fact, Cash was tame enough to enjoy a lucrative career, I'm sure, as a commercial pitchman for mainstream corporate America (notably Amoco gas).

I didn't give an opinion critical of Cash, I said I didn't care much for his music. The difference between the two isn't hard to understand. If someone wants to call the Folsom Prison album a masterwork, I don't have a problem with that, but I don't care to listen to it any more than I already have. Again, not hard to understand. I wouldn't have bothered to say anything at all about it, had it not been for one poster's insistence on dissing in a particularly thoughtless manner those who don't share his taste.

I am just so shocked that older albums are outselling the new stuff coming out these days!...(lol) When mediocrity reigns supreme, what do the labels expect?

I don't own any Johnny cash albums, so a few months back I decided to download one of his songs just for the hell of it. My choice: "One Piece At A Time". It seems Jon and I have something in common! (lol) I was raised on "Folsom Prison" back in the 1960's, so it was imprinted on my brain back then.

I really like that vintage pin-up girl style photo of Kellie Pickler on the cover of that Maxim issue! It makes me feel, er, umm,...patriotic! Yeah, that's the ticket! (lol)

Opry Alert: Tonight's Opry includes Diamond Rio, Eden's Edge, Jimmy Fortune, Chuck Mead, The Grascals, Lorrie Morgan, and John Conlee. It's about time to tune in! Grade: A

To each his own but wow that is truly the first time i've ever heard anyone not appreciate the Folsom record. Rgarded by most as a masterwork. I'm truly shocked.

Ignoring the trademark "self-righteousness etc.," I liked that Jon actually gave his own fairly straightforward opinion critical of someone prominent in the industry--even if it's Johnny Cash!--rather than making another cryptic attack on an outsider simply for expressing any critical opinion at all!

Hey, those are terms that apply to someone who thinks that it's a good idea to gratuitously (look it up) lecture other people on what they should like.

I don't think I have it, don't want it - not at any price, thanks - and see no reason at all to be ashamed about anything that's a matter of personal taste and preference. I have no problem with saying that Cash is one of the giants of country music - and, to a lesser but still definite respect, of American music in general - but I never cared much for his work beyond "One Piece At A Time" and "Oney," and I definitely don't care for anyone telling me that there's anything wrong with that.

Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison album is just $2.99 on Amazon today. So if you don't have it already (shame on you) go get it.
