Rita makes some good points. Good music is good music. Bad music is bad music. My preferred style of music to listen to day in and day out still mostly comes from the Texas Red Dirt Scene. However, using Marty Stuart as an example of many “tear the woodpile down” is a amazing record so you bet good stuff comes from Nashville. I’d rather be beat than listen to Colt Ford a ” Texas act”. So Rita is right it’s about music not geography.

Jon I was thinking the same thing about LuckyOldSun’s comment – their new cd sold more copies last week than any CD this year. And they taped a Crossroads with Emmylou that has been mentioned on most every americana blog site I visit. And they had a recent appearance on Austin City Limits as well – you would have to live in a cave with no tv/internet to not have heard of Mumford and Sons or your mind is just not open to new music.

Holy cow, you’d have to read Engine 145, not to mention all the rest of the music press, with a great deal of selectivity for that claim to be true. I’d say it’s more likely just another one of our resident anonymous troll’s feeble efforts at projecting insider cynicism.

i live in Texas and I’m not a fan of the Red Dirt scene at all- way overrated.

The Rita Ballou quote is on the money. I still think more good music comes out of Texas and it’s music scene than Nashville, but the fact is you have artists like the Casey Donahew Band, Kevin Fowler, Curtis Grimes and number of other artists that crank out music that just reeks of desperation to be accepted onto Top 40 radio.

I love the Randy Rogers Band, but the number of bands that desperately ape their style has really brought the Red Dirt/Texas Country scene way down.

“Mumford and Sons tied The Beatles for the band with the most Hot 100 hits in a week, with six.”

These “records” are always good for a laugh. Last week the news reports were abuzz that some rapper named Lil–or is it “Li’l” –Wayne had broken Elvis Presley’s record for total hits. Now it’s some group that I never heard of that’s tied the Beatles for hits in a week.

Of course, Wayno had about one #1 hit compared to about 20 for Elvis, and none of Mumford’s “hits” are even in the top 50–the Beatles probably had three in the top 10 the week they had six on the chart–but hey, a record’s a record.
