As a country fan in their mid 20s, I wasn’t fully aware of the magnitude of Glen Campbell’s influence until he went public with the alzheimer’s diginosis last year. The tributes on both the CMA and Grammy shows proved to me just what a mega star he was back in his day.

And I’m glad both organizations picked different sets of songs. While the Jimmy Webb hits are wonderful, the songs performed at the Grammy tribute show just how many well known hits he has had.

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite song of his among all those fantastic classic hits but it’s hard to beat “Whitcita Lineman.” Every time I hear that opening line, “I am a lineman for the county/but I drive the main road” my heart melts because I know what a great song I’m about to hear.

I’m glad he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame when he could enjoy and remember it.

I remember him from a CMA show from the 80′s, when they showed a clip of him on a cma show from the 70′s – was enough to make me go out and buy a greatest hits tape! (yay cassettes!!)

My favourite moment was on The Summer Brothers Smothers Hour when Glen was guest hosting the Smother Brothers summer replacement show and John Hartford came out and did ‘Gentle on my Mind’ with Gen acoustically, with just their voices, guitar and banjo. It was a majical moment for me, and I watched the Goodtime Hour faithfully.

Glen first came to my attention with in 1967 with his remake of Jack Scott’s “Burning Bridges”. Later that year he released “Gentle On My Mind” (which I liked) and “By The Time I Get To Phoenix (which I didn’t like)

In early 1968 I discovered an album that had been released a few years earlier titled THE ASTOUNDING TWELVE STRING GUITAR OF GLEN CAMPBELL. I really hadn’t seen him on television much, but that album told me that Glen was a great musician and increased the respect I had for him exponentially.

My respect for him as a performer has never diminished , even during the years he was recording dross like “Rhinestone Cowboy” and “Country Boy”

Back in the late 60′s while watching the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour live, my favorite moments were when he would sing his big radio hits like “Galveston”, “Wichita Lineman”, and “By the Time I Get To Phoenix”. Also it was always nice when he had John Hartford on the show who would join in on guitar on the songs he had written or co-written. That show was a real pleasure to watch each week and the whole family looked forward to it!

I’m ineligible but thought I’d weigh in anyway. My favorite Glen Campbell memory is probably my first- a silly 1980 release of he and Oscar the Grouch singing “Keep Smilin’” together on Sesame Country
