Joe South was an incredible talent. While his own records did not achieve the level of success they deserved, cover versions of songs he wrote will ensure that his name lives on, even if only among the few who read the songwriting credits on the record’s label

I hope everyone checked out the story on “Strange Fruit”. Sadly, I suspect most of the readership of this blog isn’t familiar with the song or even with Billie Holiday

South wrote and sang some incredible stuff. Even though, I’d bet most people today haven’t heard of him, they’d likely recognize a bunch of his songs.

I have Joe South’s 1970 Greatest Hits LP which is outstanding. Some of the other songs on the album, besides those already mentioned (except Rose Garden), include “Children”, “These Are Not My People”, “Birds of a Feather”, “The Greatest Love”, “Hush” and “I Knew You When”. Under the names of the songs on each side of the LP it says “All songs composed by Joe South” – no co-writers. Most of these songs appear to be available on i-Tunes.

Joe South had, I’ve heard, a rough life in some ways, but the funky storyteller who wrote “Walk a Mile in My Shoes,” “Down in the Boondocks,” “Games People Play” and “Rose Garden,” and was in demand to play guitar for Aretha and on Dylan’s “Blonde on Blonde” both, needs no apologies. He was a major talent of a very deep South variety.. Thanks for the music, Joe.

Its nice to see faux-Outlaw Eric Church garner all those nominations for the CMA Awards. If he wins a few, will it make him even more smug, obnoxious and self-satisfied than he already is? Does the CMA offer a special “Douchebag Outlaw” category? Hmmm…

In songs like “The Games People Play” Joe South had bit of genuine Elvis style swagger that few other artists were able to pull off. He will be missed.

Speaking of Patterson Hood (sounds like a great character name for True Blood or a Twilight movie), he will be performing soon at the Masonic Temple on the grounds of the “Hollywood Forever Cemetery”! LA has some off the wall concert venues, but that has to be one of the most kooky (although I’ve heard the acoustics are great).

Easton Corbin needs to do a guest bit on “Sons of Guns” on the Discovery Channel! Joe Perry of Aerosmith will be featured in an upcoming episode with one of his cannons! Crikey!
