Jimmy C. Newman Passes Away; Stream New Lund, Lauderdale Albums; New Music Videos

Ken Morton, Jr. | June 23rd, 2014

  • The Grand Ole Opry ranks dropped by one with the passing with the grand Cajun, Jimmy C. Newman, from cancer at the age of 86.  Marty Stuart summed it up best with his comment in the obit Peter Cooper wrote for The Tennessean: “His role became the Cajun fellow at the Opry, and that’s great. But if you go back to his 1950s recordings of ‘Cry, Cry, Darling’ and ‘Seasons of My Heart,’ you’ll witness a country music architect at work. He was a brilliant singer, a brilliant designer of country music.”
  • Speaking of Peter Cooper, he makes a semi-serious pitch for an all-Nashville radio stationImmediately, this station would be a sensation. Two-thirds of the city would listen out of sheer ego, since two-thirds of us either record music or gripe about how the Powers That Be don’t understand they should be recording our music. Tourists would listen because the station would be a soundtrack to the Music City they’ve come to experience.”
  • Take it with a grain of salt since it’s TMZ, but reports are coming out that Randy Travis still doesn’t have his speech back after the stroke and other health ailments he suffered last year.
  • Australia’s CMC interviewed The Mastersons about their new album, Good Luck Charm.
  • Jennifer Nettles and Carrie Underwood performed “9 to 5” together on the Grand Ole Opry stage.
  • Sturgill Simpson is going to join Zac Brown Band for a handful of tour dates this summer. (via press release)
  • Stephen Deusner interviewed NRBQ about their new album, Brass Tacks.
  • Stevie Wonder came in at No. 26 on CMT’s All-Time Top 40: Artists Choice, a list of the most influential artists in history as chosen by country stars themselves.
  • Drake White is the second act signed to the new Dot Records roster.
  • Miranda Lambert is on the cover of the final issue of Ladies’ Home Journal.
  • Texas band Green River Ordinance is releasing The Collection: Live & Unplugged this week. Here’s a teaser they posted on YouTube.
  • Bluegrass duo The Spinney Brothers are finishing up a new album.
  • The Texas Music Scene filmed Ray Wylie Hubbard driving around his old stomping grounds and telling old “road stories.”
  • Hank Williams III isn’t happy that Tom Hiddleston will be playing his grandfather in an upcoming biopic.
  • Jana Kramer on her upcoming sophomore album“It’s been two years. I’m completely ready for them to hear new songs. I’m excited because I’m proud of the stuff that is going to be on this next album. We’ve been playing some of it out there, and the fans really helped me choose what wound up making the album. If they didn’t like it, we’d scratch it, and try another. It’s going to be coming out in August or September.”
