That guy is just too sharp. Here I've been, trying to trick people into believing that I'm a recent Slavic immigrant named Luc Kyoldsun and Jon figures out the truth and goes and rats me out and saves the world from my nefarious schemes.

I'm not surprised to read that this Waylon tribute project is something of a fiasco. It struck me from the get-go as a bit phony.

Just in 2003,there were two major Waylon tribute albums issued, with 15 cuts each: The "mainstream" tribute on RCA, featuring such heavyweight artists as John Mellencamp, Travis Tritt, Dwight Yoakum, Hank Williams Jr., Brooks & Dunn, Allison Krauss--plus Jessi and Shooter, themselves; and the "alt" tribute on Dualtone, featuring A-listers like Guy Clark, Nanci Griffith, Norah Jones Kris Kristofferson and Robert Earl Keen.

This latest project is padded out with fewer cuts per disc and features an indisputably less-accomplished cast of characters--to the extent that the personnel are different.

I believe neither of the 2003 albums sold all that well, but those were at least worthy tributes. When I read about this new project, all it prompted me to do was to pull out of the 2003 Waylon tribute CD's and take them to my car--and I've recently been playing those.

On the Waylon Jennings estate and the Volume 2 release: As I pointed out in a column here lats month, both Jessi and Shooter took a very active part in the Sirius/XM show built around the record, to be digicast this month, so that doesn't look much like a hands off attitude about it. (Granted, many of the artists they had with them on the show were Volume One participants.)

It's the record business, folks, in 2011, and apparently some compromises had to be made to get the disc out at all. What a shock! They've probably figured out that a way to do this in the future is digital release in their own control--and their own promo challenges. Not that I have any inside track on those thoughts. Just sayin'..
