The Boxcars? If they don't play on the Opry or Music City Roots, I'm out of the loop! Crikey!

I really enjoyed last night's Music City Roots "IBMA Bluegrass Special" show through Sierra Hull's performance, at which point I had to tune out. I wish the IBMA festival concerts were streamed live in the same fashion! Gosh, that is some wonderful music and we sure can use all we can get out here in bluegrass concert starved Los Angeles.

I saw David Nail do an acoustic set in LA's tiny Mint Club last night as the 20 something gal dominated crowd sang along on pitch! This show was partially an "industry showcase" for Hollywood types but I don't think many showed up from the looks of the audience. Man do his fans love that "Red Light" song!

I also got to see and chat with Shelly Fairchild who is promoting her recent rockin' soul music release "Ruby's Money" (available on CD at her shows only). Even though Shelly has put her Nashville Big Label Music Machine experience behind her, she has fond memories of the whole process. She loved recording her "Ride" album, the music on it, and the people she got to work with in Nashville. Both Shelly and I agree its a shame her Top 40 country radio career didn't pan out. Shelly's friend songwriter Stephony Smith was in the audience and even joined Shelly on stage for a track off of "Ride" done funky style. If you like rockin', bluesy soul music sung with real intensity, then catch Shelly's show if she heads your way. Here's a short review from fangurl Patrice over at Nashville Hype:

On tuning, notice that Vince was very precise in what he said. Fact is, as Peter talks around without making crystal clear, a lot of your favorite, most emotionally compelling, *realest* records are tuned. Timing is a skill like many others - it can be well or poorly done.
