I’m curious as to what goes on at these “Highway 101 concerts”: Does Nikki Nelson come out and sing “Whiskey, If You Were a Woman,” “Somewhwere Tonight” and “Cry Cry Cry”? Does she do them in her own voice, or does she try to sound like Carlson?

I don’t doubt that this group can do a nice job on those songs, but if Paulette ain’t singin’ ‘em, then I’d consider it a cover band.

It was the Nikki Nelson version which has been going ever since the days Paulette Carlson left the group. Nikki’s voice is still in tip top condition and they put on a fun show. Highly recommended!

I would regard Highway 101 as “real” if either Nikki Nelson or Paulette Carlson were fronting it. If it is anyone else, I’d regard it as a “faux” lineup

Is that the real Highway One that you saw, fronted by Paulette Carlson or the version with the substitute lead singer? (Carlson left the group, but I read somewhere that she went back.) I believe this “Bing” single was done during the time that Carlson was away. Maybe she sings it in concert now–I’d be surprised if both female singers appeared.

I saw Highway 101 live a couple of years ago and they are still going strong. After that show I downloaded “Bing Bang Boom” and still find it immensely enjoyable when I feel the need for some pop country fluff.

The modern British DooWop group The Overtones is still putting out some top notch “Sh Boom” type music across the pond.

Just listened/watched to Boom It Was Over and I Couldn’t Say No (man, Carlene could give a steely look!) over on YouTube- Robert Ellis Orrall is someone who goes through my head quite often, especially this week as I was listening to Robert Ellis. Fixation for best album title of all time, anyone?

I never heard the country version of Sh-Boom before. Thanks. I have a 1954 cover on a Mercury Records 45 by the Crew-Cuts. The original was by the Chords, an R&B group, also in 1954.

There was a rock singer in the late 50′s, early 60′s who was known as Freddie “Boom Boom” Cannon. His hits included “Palisades Park” & “Way Down Yonder in New Orleans”.
