Well, of course it’s different. It’s not that Shocked made her comments on stage that’s the subject of judgment (a/k/a opinion), it’s the content of those comments. You might as well say that because free speech gave David Duke the same right to preach race hatred that Martin Luther King Jr. had to preach equality, there was no difference between the two. Which there pretty clearly is.

As for what her motives were, I’m pretty sure that I don’t care, and even more sure that no one posting on Engine145.com knows the first thing about them.

@Bruce: I, for one, don’t judge Michelle Shocked for her stand on gay marriage. I object to the her hostility toward her audience and the inflammatory language (the F-word). Using that word is inappropriate in general, and even moreso given the setting (San Francisco) and audience demographic. One can articulate one’s opinion on gay marriage without using that word. I think Mike W. is right — Shocked wants to shock her audience. Which is fine, I guess, as long as she gives them what they paid for (entertainment). Based on my experience 20 years ago, I doubt entertaining her audience was an objective.

Michelle Shocked just said those things for attention. Maybe she believes them, whatever, but people tend to only make remarks like that when they are desperately seeking attention, be it positive or negative.

I remember going to a Michelle Shocked concert at George Mason University about 20 years ago. She was touring in support of the Arkansas Traveler CD. Uncle Tupelo, Garth Hudson and Levon Helm were on tour with her, but had dropped out. She spent a great amount of the show babbling about how unprofessional everyone else was. Of the 60 minute show, at least half was taken up with nonseniscal monologues about people who weren’t there to defend themselves. It was by far the worst concert I had ever been to, and she came off as a serious head case. Sounds like not much has changed.

Darn Carrie Underwood. “Do You Think About Me” should’ve been the new single. “See You Again” is great, but it’s pure power pop and has no place on COUNTRY radio. At least we’re not having to suffer through “Cupid,” “One Way Ticket,” or “Nobody Ever Told You.”
