Vince Gill was on a roll last night (Friday, 1/11) at the Opry. During his segment Vince featured 60's pop rock singer Johnny Rivers (ie "Secret Agent Man", "Poor Side of Town", etc.). Afterwards Vince mentioned that Johnny had dated Vince's first "Sweethearts of the Rodeo" wife Janice before she and Vince ever met. Vince commented it was a shame that the Johhny and Janice romance didn't work out as it would have saved him a whole lot of money! Now that's what I call an "Opry Moment"! (lol)

When Aiofe was on A Prairie Home Companion in 2012 she knocked my socks off! I didn't know she was part of Crooked Still, but then I'm not familiar with that band either I guess it makes sense!

Hawkshaw Hawkins and Cowboy Copas will forever remain important names in the history of country music because of perishing in that plane crash with Patsy Cline apart from their musical accomplishments. Its nice to hear their songs played on WSM this time of year in remembrance of that tragic event.

If Kim Richey ever revisits the style of her self-titled debut album, I might get interested again! I'm still hoping that Kim and Radney Foster will get together to do some songwriting.

Opry Alert! Tonight's Opry will feature Jana Kramer, Mark Wills, The Del McCoury Band, Thompson Square, and Johnny Rivers. (That Johnny Rivers? Hmm)
Grade: B+
The Saturday Night Opry will feature Clare Bowen (Scarlett from "Nashville"), JD Souther, The Del McCoury Band, Russell Moore and IIIrd Tyme Out, Connie Smith, and Josh Thompson. Grade: A (Just for the "Scarlett Factor" alone! lol) Darn I wish Clare was performing early in the show so I could hear it!
Schedule: http://www.opry.com/shows/ThisWeek.html

And I believe the lovely and talented Ms. O’Donovan spells her first name Aoife, not Aiofe.

Fixed. Thanks for the correction.

Ralph Peer recorded the first significant, identified country music records while working as A&R chief at OKeh--the Fiddlin' John Carson sides recorded at Atlanta in 1923, on what was the first "location recording" expedition of any kind. He was also, even before that, and somewhat contrary to the suggestion of the Times article, the A&R chief of the so-called "Race" line (Clarence Williams reported to him, as did others) that recorded the first African-American blues and jazz artists. Since I'm in the process of finishing up the first full-length biography of Peer, I've spent more than a little time on these things. The book will be out later in 2014.

Of possible interest to a country music blog, Okeh's catalog also featured some great western swing by the Light Crust Doughboys, Bob Wills, et.al. There's a wonderful compilation that came out years ago that can be found repackaged in various places, e.g., here: http://www.amazon.com/OKeh-Western-Swing-Al-Bernard/dp/B000002Z5S .

And I believe the lovely and talented Ms. O'Donovan spells her first name Aoife, not Aiofe.
