oh, Rick...
thank you for such a nice compliment,
and i get what you say about their voices/vocal styles, but to me, they have both always been all heart, all the time!
sometimes when they sing from that place, the edges DO get rough, but you know they mean it! in this pro-tool'ed world, i'll take raw and honest over slick and hitting the notes...
and it's funny you bring up john prine, cause this album is the prineliest one he's had in years. i know he reveres the mailman from chicago -- and i think the postman likes the boss pretty much, too!
at a time when the nation is challenged by so many things, it's the common ground i think that will save us. thanks for finding it in what i wrote... and maybe listen from there, if you wanna.
sometimes the shift can change everything: i know it has for me over the years --

Holly, I really enjoy your insightful writing style whether or not I care about the subject matter. A really gifted writer can make almost any topic interesting. Thusly this was a very enjoyable read even though I've never given a rat's arse about Spruce and his vast legion of disciples or his music. Yes, he's a brilliant songwriter but I've never cared for his vocals.

Mostly though its because all the people I knew who really got into Bruce and his music back in the 1970's were liberals and democrats, much like the John Prine crowd, so I just couldn't get interested. There is just something about the liberal mindset and worldview that just clicks with Bruce and John that I don't respond to at all. Maybe if they were both better vocalists I might have cared a bit more. Nah, probably not....
