Your brilliant mind is operating in such a stratosphere that it cannot discern that someone else might have noticed what you call “the utter… banal[ity]” of the original line but chose to respond with a throwaway quip, rather than with a pedantic bit of analysis.

I won’t say that YOU ought to be embarrassed because I get the sense that you’ve never been embarrassed about anything that you’ve said or done since the days of the Nixon administration.

If you actually read the whole thing and still managed to misunderstood it that badly, then you really ought to be embarrassed. The statement is so obviously true that it tips into the realm of the utterly banal. I advise you to concentrate on the word “myth” for a while, and see if a glimmer of light doesn’t finally appear.
