So according to a prolific poster on this board, has Lee Ann Womack jeopardized both her good standing as a country artist and her future success on the country music sales charts by appearing on the Americana Music Honors and Awards show?…

I’m very curious to hear the forthcoming Richard Thompson album produced by Buddy Miller.

As I recall, RT’s new one will feature a “power trio” band configuration and the idea sprung out of his bringing a just a drummer and bass player with him on Cayamo 2012 (Didn’t go to that one. If only I became a parent 20 years earlier). Recorded at Buddy’s house, I believe.

I saw RT a couple of nights before the AMA’s at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA. I try never to miss him when he comes through town.

I went on the Cayamo 2011 cruise and one of the great meories was seeing Richard Thompson with Buddy Miller in the audience right below me. One time, I saw Buddy shaking his head in wonderment with a great big smile on his face. At the end of the show, Richard called up Buddy and they played Keep Your Distance, which Buddy and Julie covered on their 2000 release. Heavenly.

If it is a working genre, and it is, it looks at what it can rightly include as much as exclude. The Americana scene in the UK, incidentally, is strong, vital, and sometimes better understood than it is (at least in media) here. No one seems to have problems with the term there. Saw Mr. Thompson at the Station Inn last night..where we found ourselves sitting with Nashville songwriting ace Gary Nicholson, who, like me, is an admirer, and has been at dozens of Thompson shows over the years. Between the songwriting chops and the ever amazing guitar skills, and his own interconnecting of British roots music, American (rarely seen him do a show that doesn’t bring in some Hank Williams, cajun music, Chuck Berry, etc.) and whatever he has in mind, I heard no objections to that award within organized Americana whatsoever–just standing ovations.

As much as I liked Nora Jane Struthers with Bearfoot, I like her more with her own band. I’m excited to hear about her forming a new band and look forward to her next album when it finally gets made. Now she just needs a simpatico songwriting partner to be the Lennon to her McCartney…

Gosh, no Americana award for Buddy Miller?! Has the earth tilted further on its axis or something? Does this have anything to do with the Mayan calendar? I’m truly perplexed…(lol)

Best country music blog comment of the week award goes to Juli for: ” No word yet on the broadcast date or existence of Country’s Night to Country.” It kind of says it all.

I was going to purchase the new album from The Time Jumpers until Tuesday night’s Opry performance reminded me Vince Gill is now a band member. Vince on western swing style guitar is awesome, I just don’t care for his singing voice. Guess I’ll have to cherry pick the songs fronted by Dawn Sears at Amazon. Oh well.

PS – The Aussie artist Music City Roots show isn’t until next week as MCR didn’t want to compete with the Americana Festival and awards show. DOH! I need to pay closer attention to the show dates on MCR’s calendar. Tsk tsk.
