Jason Isbell is one of the best lyricists in music today. I would put him up there with Todd Snider, Steve Earle, Robert Earl King and Chris Knight. He has that uncanny ability to take a whole bevy of emotions and experiences, compress them into a succinct line or series of lines, and when you open it up, you feel like you have been hit with a shotgun blast of your own memories and experiences.

Sam, I firmly believe that everyone at least needs to hear “Dress Blues.” Definitely check it out; IMO it’s Isbell’s best work to date.

I’ve only got three DBT CDs, and the only one with Jason Isbell (A Blessing And A Curse) is my least favorite, so I’ve never really checked out any of his solo stuff. Insightful review, and thanks for putting it on my radar, Juli.
