Ken Morton, Jr. | March 25th, 2013

  • The Academy of Country Music announced the recipients of some special and industry awards prior to the April 7 broadcast.  Some of the winners include:

Keith Whitley and the Judds - Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award (honoring music acts that are pioneers in the country music genre)

Jason Aldean – Crystal Milestone Award (honoring a significant career milestone)

Blake Shelton – Gene Weed Special Achievement Award (honoring unprecedented, unique and outstanding individual achievement in country music)

Lady Antebellum - Jim Reeves International Award (honoring an artist or group for outstanding contributions to the acceptance of country music throughout the world.)

  • Sammy Kershaw, Joe Diffie and Aaron Tippin have released a new single together called “All in the Same Boat” to support their tour together.
  • Lady Antebellum shared the track listing for their upcoming album, Golden.
  • Here’s a new Laura Bell Bundy song called “Two Step.”
  • Singer-songwriter Julie Reeves is the new morning radio host at WDGG in Huntington, WV. She’s competing directly against her ex-husband Cledus T. Judd who does mornings at crosstown rival WTCR.
  • Speaking of Judd, Octomom stars in his new video for “Honeymoon,” a song that parodies Little Big Town’s “Pontoon.”
  • Barbara Mandrell will be coming out of retirement to sing at George Jones’ final Nashville concert this November.
  • Meghan Linsey doesn’t rule out a Steel Magnolia reunion.
  • Thompson Square talked with Chuck Dauphin at Billboard about their “more focused” sophomore album: “I get the sophomore thing – about having your whole life to write for that first album, but at the same time, you can’t put every song that you wrote for it on there. We had a lot left over. But, It seemed like what we found from the outside really fit the mood. We felt very fortunate. I think from a song quality standpoint, it’s even better than the first one.”
  • Stream “That’s Who I Am,” a Neko Case song from the upcoming John Mellencamp, Stephen King, and T Bone Burnett project, Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.
  • A pending bill would allow the city of Montgomery, Alabama to assume ownership of the cemetery in which Hank Williams is buried.
  • Mark Kroos plays “Dueling Banjos” with… himself in a very fun video.
  • Kenny Chesney has a new line of signature sunglasses.
  • Mountain Heart fiddler Jim VanCleve contracted Dengue Fever during a visit St. Croix last week.

Darn, why didn’t Nell Robinson do a video of one of her Cackle Sisters songs?…(lol)

There is no arguing that Kristen Kelly’s “He Loves to Make Me Cry” is a top shelf blue eyed soul song, but will it get airplay on Top 40 Airhead Country Radio? The Opry audience loves it when Kristen sings it live (like last Saturday night), but I can’t see radio giving it a chance although I hope I’m wrong.

Will the new Laura Bell Bundy song make an appearance on “Hart of Dixie”? I sure wouldn’t mind if it did, and especially if she was wearing her “Giddy On Up” video outfit.

The term “3D Printer” is quite misleading but it’s unfortunately become standard vernacular. “3D Fabrication Device” would be much better. Oh well.

I am surprisingly fond of this new Laura Bell Bundy track. It has enough personality and actually works to the point that not even the Colt Ford verse bugs me. I would actually love to see this become a hit because she took what Aldean and Brantley and such have been trying to do and actually pulled it off. Bundy really is the closest thing we have to be progressive in the same manner as Shania Twain. She incorporates aspects of pop without losing her country side and is able to pull off even the somewhat timid tracks with her personality.

I’m afraid I couldn’t make it through more than a few seconds of the Bundy track.

When groups you never heard of make the news on the possibility of a reunion; ….it is time to turn the page. heck, maybe their album will be released on vinylSimilarly, when The Judds are pioneers of anything…always nice to see Guy Clark get recognized.

No comment on Bundy’s song as this is a country music forum and that song, to me, doesn’t qualify.

Glad to from Kershaw, Tippon, and Diffie. Great vocalists. Gotta love those guys.

Neko Case’s song is, uhm… interesting.

Rucker does very respectable on “W

“Barbara Mandrell will be coming out of retirement to sing at George Jones’ final Nashville concert this November.”

I don’t know, but I’m starting to get the feeling that the one person who’s going to barely be heard at this “George Jones Concert” is George Jones.

It seems like it should be billed as a festival rather than a concert, since it sounds like it’ll take all day to fit in all of those performers.

Overdoing it may lessen the impact. It’s been done in this case. But oh well, the Possum is the boss.

Bruce, you have an interesting definition of “not making a comment. “

That is a critique that is justified. Error noted.

My dang keyboard messed up and my other comments were posted before corrections. Surprised you didn’t comment on those but I guess you were being merciful.

Still like hearing from Kershaw, Tippon, and Diffie.
